1. Review General Rules.
2. A 4-H member may exhibit in the collection and/or educational class for the phase in which
they are enrolled.
3. All entries are to be placed in a standard size, Plexiglas, covered, wooden box with outside
dimensions of 18 X 24 X 3 1/2". Exception: Introductory Entomology class 4100, box can be
cardboard with approximate dimensions of 9 X 12 X 3", covered with plastic wrap.
4. Each exhibitor is required to identify each box by placing an identification label bearing
exhibitor's name and county and the class. The number of orders, specimens (and families where
required) must also be included on the exhibitor's box identification label. One label goes on the
upper left corner of the box (inside) and the other on the lower right corner of the box (outside).
5. Entomology labels, order labels and pins can be ordered through the County Extension Office.
6. For each collection class, two labels will be entered on the pin beneath each specimen. First
(closest to the specimen) is the common name label and the second label is a date/locality label.
"Date" refers to date the specimen was collected and "Locality" refers to County and State where
specimen collected. Exception: Introductory Entomology class 4100 only requires one label, the
date/locality label.
7. Arrange specimens in the box so it can be displayed lengthwise. (See illustration in revised
4-H Entomology Check Sheet for State Fair competition, 4-H 518). All specimens should be
grouped according to order with the order labels pinned to the base of the box.
8. Exhibitors can exhibit in the same collection class a maximum of 3 years or until they receive
a purple ribbon at the Kansas State Fair, whichever comes first. Exceptions: Class 4100, open to
1st and 2nd year beginners and only 7-9 yrs. of age; and advanced entomology (exhibitors may
continue to exhibit in this class at the Kansas State fair as long as they remain eligible for 4-H
membership).
9. Emphasis in judging will be placed on the variety of Kansas insects represented in the
collection, accuracy of identification, skill and technique acquired in mounting of specimens and
arrangement and appearance of the collection.
10. Educational exhibits are to be displayed in one standard size insect box, note item 3, and
identified by use of an identification label, note item 4. It is to include the exhibitor's name and
county and the class. Information on numbers of orders and specimens is not needed for
educational exhibits.
11. Educational exhibits may consist of specialized groups of insects, or relate to any aspect of
insect life. Displays should be presented in a clear, concise and interesting manner, with a
maximum of 150 specimens collected during the current year. Title of the exhibit should be
indicated inside the box.
12. Purpose of the educational exhibit is to learn more about the importance, life cycles, biology,
ecology, diversity, etc. of insects and related arthropods. Subject matter can be as varied as the
animals themselves.

4100 - Introductory Entomology Collection, 1st and 2nd year beginners and 7-9 yrs. of age.
Display in a cardboard box a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 insects, representing at least
6 orders. See rules above. This class is not eligible for state fair.
4101 - Beginning Entomology Collection 1, display in one standard insect box a minimum of 50
and a maximum of 125 insects representing at least 7 orders. See rules above.
4102 - Beginning Entomology Collection 2, display in one standard insect box a minimum of 75
and a maximum of 150 insects representing at least 9 orders. See rules above.
4103 - Beginning Entomology Educational Exhibit
4104 - Intermediate Entomology Collection, display in two standard insect boxes a minimum of
100 and a maximum of 300 insects representing at least 10 orders. See rules above. In addition,
family identification is required for all insects in any two of the following six orders: Orthoptera,
Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Homoptera, Diptera, and/or Hymenoptera. Observe that the number of
families identified in these two orders must be recorded on the box identification labels. Families
represent subdivisions of order grouping, and family labels will be pinned to the bottom of the
box to represent subdivision of the appropriate orders.
4105 - Intermediate Entomology Educational Exhibit
4106 - Advanced Entomology Collection, display in three standard insect boxes a minimum of
150 and a maximum of 450 insects representing at least 12 orders. See rules above. In addition,
family identification is required for all insects belonging to the six basic orders outlined in class.
List on the back of the box what you did this year to improve your project. Family identification
of insects in the remaining orders is optional, but desirable as long as accuracy is maintained. All
butterflies appearing in the collection should be labeled with the correct common name.
