1. Review General Rules.
2. All leaf exhibits are to be mounted on 8 1/2 X 11" heavy stock paper and be placed in loosed-leaf binders. (Magnetic or adhesive filler sheets for photographic prints are recommended.) Twigs and fruit collections may be exhibited in whatever manner you choose (maximum size 2 X 3'.)
3. Exhibitor's name, club, age and year in project should be on front cover in a prominent location.
4. For ideas on mounting, see the Forestry Project Member's Guide (4-H 279). Exhibit one complete leaf where possible. Where leaf is too large, exhibit as much of the terminal portions as possible. Sketch in reduced scale the entire leaf and illustrate where the exhibited portion comes from.
5. Leaves should be identified with an appropriate label located near the leaf on the same page. These labels should include the proper common name (as listed in 4-H Bulletin 334, "List of Native Kansas Trees"), location (city and/or county where collected), and date (day, month, year) collected.
6. Divide specimens into the following two sections: Native Kansas Trees and Non-Native Trees.
7. A Champion and Reserve Champion will be chosen for each class from each of the purple ribbon winners.
4500 - Beginning: Exhibit leaves of a minimum of 10 different native Kansas trees or leaf, twig and fruit of five different native trees. Can include non-native specimens in addition to the required native Kansas tree specimens.
4501 - Intermediate: Exhibit leaves of a minimum of 20 different native Kansas trees (including at least 10 new leaves in addition to those previously exhibited) or leaf, twig and fruit of 10 different native trees (including at least 5 in addition to those previously exhibited). Can include non-native specimens in addition to the required native Kansas tree specimens.
4502 - Advanced: Exhibit leaves of a minimum of 40 different native Kansas trees (including at least 20 new leaves in addition to those previously exhibited) or leaf, twig and fruit of 20 different native trees (including at least 10 new in addition to those previously exhibited). Can include non-native in addition to the required native Kansas trees.
4503 - Seed Project Notebook: Project notebook with 10 or more seeds collected with pictures showing germination study.
4504 - Project Notebook: Project notebook of your work in the Forestry Project.
4505 - How Forests Serve Us: Display of collected wood samples mounted on poster board or any stiff material no larger than
2' W X
3' H. Accompanied by a 500 word essay displayed in a covered binder.
4506 – Educational Display, Must be related to the Forestry Project.
