1. Review General Rules.
2. Exhibitors may enter in both geology and lapidary classes. 4-Hers may have only one entry on classes 4200-4203 and/or one entry in class 4204.
3. Classes 4200, 4201 and 4203 are to be displayed in an exhibit box (18 X 24 X 3 1/2"). All specimens are to be arranged across the narrow (18") dimensions of the exhibit box, making the exhibit 18" across the top and 24" deep. The cover must be removable from the top or slide open at the top. Screws, locks or other devices that would prevent judges from removing the cover should not be used.
4. Plexiglas covers are to be used (Plexiglas ONLY).
5. Each exhibitor is required to identify each exhibit box on the inside by placing an identification label bearing name, county and number of specimens in the upper left-hand corner of the cover. Use clear double-sided tape to adhere gummed labels. A label with the same information must be placed on the outside lower right corner of the box.
6. Geology specimens should be labeled with the number of the specimen, date collected, specimen name or description and locality (county) where collected.
7. For Geology classes 4200, 4201 and 4203, specimens should be mounted in the box by proper groups - rocks, minerals and fossils. For these classes, all specimens must be collected from locations in Kansas . Out-of-state specimens will not count in the minimum number for the class and will not be considered in the judging.
8. Any 4-Her enrolled in Geology may exhibit in the Lapidary classes. If appropriate, an exhibit box smaller than the standard size may be used for lapidary exhibits (18 X 12 X 3 1/2"). Specimens should be arranged across the 18" dimension of the exhibit box, making the exhibit 18" across the top and 12" deep. Lapidary will be judged on the following criteria: Workmanship and Content - 60 points; Presentation and Showmanship - 30 points; Accuracy and information - 10 points.
4200 - Display at least 15 rocks, minerals and fossils collected during the current 4-H year. Limited to one exhibit box. Fossils must be identified to the Phylum level. Open to 4-Hers who have not exhibited 4-H geology at the state fair.
4201 - Display at least 30 different rock, minerals and fossils, at least 5 of each. Fifteen must be collected during the current 4-H year. Limited to one exhibit box. Fossils must be identified to the Phylum level. Open to 4-Hers who have not exhibited 4-H Geology at the state fair or who have exhibited at the state fair one time in 4-H Geology.
4202 - Display at least 45 rocks, minerals or fossils, at least 5 of each. More than one specimen of the same kind of rock or mineral or species of a fossil may be exhibited if this duplication represents different geological formations. Specimens label must show this distinction (Fort Hays limestone, not just limestone; exact species must have different formation names listed on the I.D. card - Composita Brachiopod from Morrill Limestone, not just Brachiopod or Composita Brachiopod). Exhibit limited to two boxes. Exhibit must include 15 specimens of current year's work. Rocks must be identified by their proper name and type. Fossils must be identified to the Phylum level. Open to 4-Hers who have exhibited at the state fair two or three times.
4203 - Display at least 60 rocks, minerals or fossils - at least 5 kinds of each. More than one specimen of the same kind of rock or mineral or species of a fossil may be exhibited if this duplication represents different geological formations (see examples in class 4202). Exhibited limited to two boxes. Exhibit must include 15 specimens of current year's work. Rocks must be identified by their proper name and type. Fossils must be identified to the Phylum, Class and Genus levels if possible. Open to 4-Hers who have exhibited at the state fair four or more times.
4204 - Special Geology Exhibit, a special exhibit relating to everyday living, or to a mineral test, a rock formation, geological history, species of a fossil, forms of one mineral, a variation of one kind of rock, archaeological artifacts or Indian artifacts. Exhibit limited to 4 feet of table space.
4205 - Lapidary, display at least 30 stones and minerals that will cut or polish. Five of the specimens must be collected by the 4- Her from a native site (not limited to Kansas ). Polish 15 of the gemstones by tumbling. Label, giving identification of material and county where collected, or state or county of origin for non-Kansas material. Entries limited to one exhibit box. See rule 8.
4206 - Lapidary, exhibit at least 6 gemstones and minerals that have received lapidary treatment. Lapidary treatment may consist of tumbling, polishing and end or face or flat lapping. Specimens must represent at least 3 different gemstones and minerals, and include at least 3 cabochons of any size or shape. Three of the specimens must be mounted. Label specimens as appropriate including locality (state) where originated. Entries limited to one exhibit box. See rule 8.
