CROPS 1. Products must have been grown by the exhibitor in current year. There is to be only one
exhibit per variety. 2. Exhibits in this division need not be mature. Efforts should be made, however, to select as mature entries as possible. 3. All Crop classes call for a one gallon sample: (Wheat, oats, barley, alfalfa, or rye) to be exhibited, the container may have a 2 ½” diameter Styrofoam cylinder placed in it to reduce the amount of grain to about three quarts. 4. Alfalfa exhibit to consist of one flake or slice from a rectangular bale, or a 10-inch section cut from a round bale. The flake or slice should be approximately 6 inches in thickness and tied in two directions. The sample should also be placed in a clear plastic bag. 5. Some classes will be divided into two classes. Dry land (D) & Irrigated (I). Corn 500 D – Corn – 5 Cornstalks (Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). 500 I – Corn – 5 Cornstalks (Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). SPECIAL AWARD CLASS - Corn will be judged on height, root structure and ear quality. Soybeans 501 D – Soybeans – 5 plants (Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). 501 I – Soybeans – 5 plants (Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). Sunflowers 502 D - Sunflowers – 5 plants (Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). 502 I - Sunflowers – 5 plants (Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). Sorghum 503– Sorghum – 5 plants ( Roots and all, place roots in a plastic bag). Other Grain 504 – Small Grains – oats, barley, rye – 1 gal. Jar 505 – Grains Harvested (Fall 2000) – 1 gal. Jar Alfalfa Hay Sample 506 – Alfalfa Hay Sample 507 – Alfalfa Protein Contest Special Classes 508 – Tallest Corn Plant – Single Specimen 509 – Tallest Cultivated Sunflower – Single Specimen 510 – Tallest Soybean – Single Specimen 511 – Largest Head Cultivated Sunflower - Single Specimen Wheat 1. Name the variety of your crop on your exhibit card. 2. The top three in each class will receive monetary awards. 3. Criteria used in judging physical appearance includes: amount of chaff and foreign material, weed seeds, size and shape of kernels, amount of shrunken and broken kernels, color of the grain (color should be dark brown with no yellow berries), and kernels should be uniform. Hand picking allowed. 512 A – Wheat – 1-gallon jar – will be judged on appearance only. 512 Y – Wheat – 1-gallon jar – will be judged on appearance only. 512 S – Wheat – 1 gallon jar – will be judged on appearance only. Wheat Quality 1. Grain bin samples only. NO handpicked samples. Your 10 pound sample must be into Rick Snell by July 1st for a protein test. 2. Name the variety of your crop on your exhibit card. The superintendent of crops and Rick Snell will break down the varieties into ten classes. 3. The top three overall will receive monetary awards. All others will receive ribbons. 4. Criteria used in judging physical appearance includes: amount of chaff and foreign material, weed seeds, size and shape of kernels, amount of shrunken and broken kernels, color of the grain (color should be dark brown with no yellow berries), and kernels should be uniform. Samples were to be taken directly from truck or combine with no cleaning. Handpicking is allowed in the gallon jar class. 5. Quality is based on protein percent and test weight of the grain, which is converted to a point system. 513 – Wheat Quality – Market Class Market Alfalfa Show All exhibits in the Market Alfalfa Show shall consist of a representative sample of the hay lot. Sampling shall be done using a forage core sampler. After sampling a minimum of 10 bales, mix sample and submit to Rick Snell at the Barton County Extension Office by June 10. For help with sampling, contact the extension office. Please mark on outside of package “Alfalfa Market Show.” All entries mailed or shipped must be postpaid. The alfalfa exhibited will become the property of the Barton County Fair. All entries submitted will be judged based upon relative feed values used in the “Wisconsin System” and crude protein. 514 – Market Alfalfa | |
